On Saturday Sept. 16 from 10 am to 2 pm the Las Lomas Classic Car Show took place in the front parking lot of Las Lomas High School.

The show is a fundraiser for the class of 2018’s “All-Knighter,” the senior’s annual graduation party. The goal this year was to raise $5,000. In years past the show has made up to $10,000. Although the show has free admission, the event raises money by costing $25 to register a car in the show and the dealerships advertising at the show donate $20 for every person who fills out a form for a test drive.

“It’s kind of fun, it’s the perfect community event and it makes a little bit of money,” said car show coordinator Andrea Baldacci.

The Classic Car Show has been an annual event at Las Lomas since 2010. Typically 70-100 cars register for the show each year. It features people’s vintage cars and new cars from all over the community. There is also a BBQ, raffle, and prizes given to the winners of the show.

Las Lomas Senior Casey Schnittker displayed his 1954 Chevy Delray Coupe in the show and was chosen by Auto Shop teacher Steve Boone to be a judge as well. It is his third year in Auto Shop, and he greatly enjoys the class. “It’s just so hands on. You learn a lot,” said Schnittker.

Sherry James has been a loyal attendee of the Las Lomas Car Show for five consecutive years, bringing her two 1929 two-door Roadster Pickups.

After being asked about one of her Roadsters, James said, “I bought it years ago from a friend. It’s had three different engines in it. It started out with a flathead, then went to a four cylinder, then a Chevy 350 engine, and then now it’s got a BOV 6 in it. It’s all open drive.”

One of the reasons she comes back to the show every year is because both of her daughters attended Las Lomas, and she enjoys supporting the school. Interestingly, her car drove in the homecoming parade. “It’s done homecoming at Las Lomas here in 1986,” said James.
