Go for Green
“They’re a bunch or really nice young men that all have characteristics that I feel are very important to play the game of golf,” said boy’s golf coach Kevin Crouch. Crouch has been coaching golf at Las Lomas for six years and every year he claims that “these are the best kids I’ve ever coached.”
This year’s team has twelve members, eight of which play tournaments. “We have a mixed bag like we do every year,” said Crouch, “I believe this year we have two seniors, three juniors, three sophomores, and four freshmen”.
“The golf team is pretty close,” said senior Maxwell Holm, “It’s probably one of the most positive environments. Everyone gets along the upperclassmen are all super nice to the younger kids and it’s just a very comfortable environment for everyone on the team.”
This year, the team has had a great run, winning 10 out of 14 matches and placing second in three tournaments and fourth in one.The team competed in this year’s NCS tournament of champions. “My hopes are that we place in the top three so we can move on to Norcal, which would be the first time in my coaching tenure that that has happened.” The team as a whole finished in the middle of the pack but, individually, Max Holm advanced to NorCal.
When asked what his hopes were for the remaining golf team were, Holm answered, “I just hope they stay competitive. After my class is gone, we’re losing a lot of probably the best people in our league but, between the two sophomores and the juniors on the team we should be in good shape for next year.”
Holm, who has been a part of the golf team since his freshman year, is going on to play golf at Princeton for the next four years. “I started picking up a club when I was four years old,” said Holm, “but, I started playing competitively when I was ten.”
Holm’s love and dedication to the game drives him to practice at least six days a week and to even skip school to attend matches with the other tournament players. “I miss a lot of time for non-school related tournaments,” said Holm. “It’s fifty percent of my life. It’s something that has become just such a big part of me. It gives me the opportunity to be competitive and showcase my talent, or the talent that I feel I have, against the best kids in the country.”
