New Era, New Coach
Coach Doug Longero is considered the greatest Las Lomas football coach of all time, coaching from 1999-2012 with a career record of 112-58-1. Coach Longero left after the 2012 season going 5-8 that year to go back to school. “I went back to school to get my masters degree and at the time I got hired to be the DVC coach,” said Longero.
Five years later, Coach Longero has come back, and there is buzzing across the school. The phrase “Relaunch” has been chanted at the first home game this season. “I decided to come back to the program to give it a restart,” said Longero. He’s hoping to continue his coaching success here at Las Lomas.
Las Lomas football had it’s worst season ever last year, going 0-10, and the year before going 1-9. Players were not happy about it and one of the main reasons why Longero came back was because he was tired of seeing the program suffer these past couple of years.
One of the main reasons why Longero came back was because he was tired of seeing the program suffer these past couple of years. When talking about rebuilding the team back to where it use to be, “This is going to be a process, not an overnight thing,” said Longero.
The difference in the team from last year to this year is substantial. “We are running a passed based offense, passing from around 400-450 yards a game; our quarterback has almost 1,000 passing yards through three games,” said Longero.
So far, the offense has been executing and the results have shown. Through the first three games this season, the team has put up 92 points, and last year through the first three games the team only put up 35 points.
Las Lomas football this year has seven more regular games left this year, hoping to find themselves with a seed in the North Coast Section Playoffs. With the coaching of Longero and the new found confidence of the varsity players, we will soon hopefully see our knights in NCS.
