Las Lomas Cheer Team’s New Addition
Las Lomas now has our first male cheerleader. Marcus Lin, a freshman, successfully tried out and was put onto the JV team but plans to do competitive cheer in the spring when the opportunity arises.
Stormy Mercado, also a freshman, is good friends with Marcus and is excited to have him on the team, “Everyone loves him, and he was very impressive at tryouts,” said Mercado. “They’re all looking forward to the new stunts we’ll be able to do with a guy, and we’re just looking forward to have a male cheerleader.”
Lin tried out for a few reasons, “I wanted to try out because I have friends who are or have been on cheer teams before and I love the atmosphere of the teams.” said Lin.
The team is excited to have him, “So far the team atmosphere has been positive. They’re excited to have a boy because I offer a lot in terms of strength in stunting.” said Lin.
Coach Laurel Londahl is very happy to have Lin on the team, “My first impression is that he’s enthusiastic and going to be a wonderful asset to our team!” said Londahl.
Even though he’s the only boy on the team, he doesn’t mind, “I think it’s better to focus on the fact that he’s going to be a great asset to the team rather than his gender.” He wanted to participate in the sport since it included athletic abilities and leaderships roles.
Lin wants to make an impact on Las Lomas before he graduates, “This season I’m looking forward to cheer on the Knights,” said Lin. “I also want to become a larger part of the Las Lomas community and have an impression be left on the school when I leave.”
