Divers Make Huge Commitment for Small Team
Our diving team here at Las Lomas is not only small, but also incredibly special.
With only two senior divers on the team, it’s an unique experience for both of them.
“Practices don’t even feel like practices half the time because they are all just fun,” said senior Cami Cox. “I mean, of course there’s work that’s put in but most of the time it’s a very chill laid back experience.”
Because there are so few divers among the different schools in the district, Campolindo, Las Lomas, Acalanes, and Miramonte hold their practices all together.
“It’s called the CLAM team. There’s one coach for all of us,” said senior Iaroslav Titov. “Practice is at Acalanes every Monday through Thursday.”
Cox said this is not as inconvenient as it sounds.
“I met my three best friends through diving and none of them went/go to LL,” she said. “And everyone is always super supportive of each other if we’re attempting new dives and other stuff.”
Both Las Lomas divers have different stories behind how they got into the sport.
“I got into diving because it’s something that I’ve always wanted to try,” Cox said. “I took a few classes at a club diving place and that’s how I found out LL had a small team so I joined it my freshman year.”
She found that she loved it.
“It’s a funny thing because I think my entire freshman year was my best memory.”
As for Titov, he found his passion in the sport through a mistake by his mom.
“I’ve been diving since I was four and a half,” he said. “I got into diving totally by accident. My mom, when I was small, wanted to make me swim, but then the coach came up to her and told her, at this age, diving is the same as swimming. She totally bought it, and just gave me to the diving coach. And I just stayed there!”
Titov won first place at NCS Diving his sophomore year and second place his junior year.
He will continue to participate in the competition again this year and hopes to finish the season off with great scores in the section meet.
