Tennis Team Struggles to Get Results But Focuses on Road to Improvement
As the supporting parents and enthusiastic fans approach the tennis courts on a gloomy Tuesday, the two teams, Las Lomas and Northgate, are facing each other on the center court and are cheering out of appreciation as they are introduced to each player on the opposing teams.
The boys tennis team is “going great” says sophomore Matteo Rojas who has been enjoying his second season on the Las Lomas varsity tennis team.
The team has not been having a strong season with an overall score of two wins and eight loses.
“The team overall has improved and we’ve gotten better at winning matches,” said senior and
co-captain, Cole Andrews.
The team continues to work hard as they reach the end of their season. Practicing every night and with a match every Tuesday and Thursday and the occasional tournament, the team works hard for their next match.
“We have a new coach this season which I think has really helped everyone improve a lot this season,” said Andrews about Coach Rob Allison.
Allison said that his team has some “stand-out guys in the sense that they are extremely nice and well-rounded young chaps.”
Alongside Allison, senior captains, Grant Havrilenko and Cole Andrews lead the team on their road to improvement.
Though the team has had a rough season, their game against Clayton Valley Charter School was a victory. A 9-0 win rebuilt the team’s confidence, especially since the Clayton Valley stands were full with spectators even though their team is not the best.
“I think their stands were full because either they have good spirit or that they didn’t want to go home so they stayed at school,” said sophomore Cooper Andrews.
The players who are not graduating this year are looking forward to their next season of varsity tennis next year and hope to improve their score.
