Las Lomas's Octothorpic Club

Left to Right: Blair Sylph, Kiran O' Farrell, and Amy Hao

The Octothorpic Club meets on Wednesdays in room 403 at lunch. “Octothorpic Club is a project oriented, creativity club. What that means is that everyone in the club comes from a different artistic discipline, which includes: writing, composing, drawing, programming, and more. These members work together to complete a project, which can be anything from a 4-panel comic to an expansive concept album,” says leader Blair Selph.

Selph started this club around halfway through last year, "I wanted a place for me and my friends to work together on creative projects," she said.

Many students wonder what the club is because of its strange name. Amy Hao, another member in the club, says, "What I like about the club is that the projects are really fun and I like working together with the rest of the members." The club's name came from the title of one of the club's main projects that had the word "octothorpic" in it. The actual word "octothorp" is just another word for the pound sign.

Currently the club members are working on a short novel that Selph wrote, called Hilt Cyan. Selph started writing this novel in 2015 and finished it this past summer. One member, Keiran O' Farrell, is editing the writing, while another member, Hao, is doing artwork for the story. Hilt Cyan is a series of short novels. Selph is currently writing the second book and plans on writing as many as 14 more novels for this series. "Hilt is about people from different worlds coming together to defeat a horrible evil," said Selph, who plans on having the second novel finished by the end of this year. The club is also working on an ongoing web comic that started around the beginning of this school year called The Bothersom Dragon, also written by Selph.

Past projects that the Octothorpic club has worked on includes: interactive novels, video games, concept albums and comics. The club also has a website, octothorpic.com, where Blair posts news about the projects the club is currently working on.
