Valentine's Day at Las Lomas
This Valentine's Day was the sixth year that Las Lomas has embraced the holiday with much love and appreciation with valegrams, songs delivered to students from the Las Lomas acapella group, Dulcinea, and roses delivered by the leadership class.
Senior Mikala Choy, a singer in Dulcinea, enjoys being a part of the project. "I love being in a group with people who share the same interests as I do," said Choy. "And I think it's really amazing to hear the the result of all of our voices collaborating to make something beautiful."
This is the first year fellow senior, Lile Donohue, performed valegrams for students. "I'm not an amazing singer. I just saw all the connections it made," said Donohue. "When people bond over music, it's something really cool."
Junior Serene Hammami has been in Dulcinea since she was a freshmen and is now one of the the leaders who facilitates the program. She arranges all the music that they perform and teaches them to the group. "I love arranging music. It makes me super happy now that I have an outlet to do it," said Hammami. "It's really great and we have such a strong bond." The songs she selected and arranged for the valegrams were Fever, Love on Top, and My Girl.
For Valentine's Day, freshman Samaya Joshi was one of many students from Leadership that were in charge of handing out roses. Students were able to buy a rose for their significant others, friends, and even teachers. All proceeds were donated to Pencils of Promise, a non-profit organization that builds schools and provides more educational opportunities for children in developing countries.
"It makes people feel good, important and appreciated even if you don't have an actual valentine," said Joshi. Not only did the people who received the roses were touched, many who witnessed these heartwarming gestures also felt incredibly happy.
It's freshman Mariyah Keifa's first year at Las Lomas, and she loved the Valentine spirit. "It made me feel like Las Lomas is a very welcoming place," said Keifa. "A place where everyone is valued."
