The Cause is Heartbroken After Red House Closes
"I was 7 or 8 and my mom signed me up for rock and roll camp and it was like the best few weeks of my life up to that point. It was just amazing, I'd been to skateboard camp and even baseball camp. That's really where it all started was at the Red House rock and roll camp," said junior Andrew Milne.
After 11 years of being in Walnut Creek, Red House closed on Dec. 16, but its lessons and band programs will continue to run at its future location.
Las Lomas's band, The Cause, is heartbroken over the loss of Red House. "It makes me feel very sad, Red House was a great place that local bands, like us, love and we all wish it would stay open," said freshman and guitarist/backup vocals, Mylo Lynch.
"It's terrible, I'm heartbroken. I grew up there," said lead singer, Milne.
"I think it's a shame that it is closing due to financial hardships. It was a place for people to feel together and welcomed. It was the only live venue of its kind in Walnut Creek and it will be missed," said sophomore and bassist, Ben Wilson.
"It was pretty much like the only escape from Walnut Creek in Walnut Creek, the only place you could go that was kind of like the city, kind of like that whole scene, there's new music coming in and out all the time and all that stuff; it was just a great place," said Milne.
"A favorite memory was probably the first show we had there as The Cause, we brought a ton of people it was just a great experience because it was our first show and it was still to this day one of the best turn outs we've had and we played pretty well, it was just a great night," said Milne.
The four members of The Cause love hanging out together and writing new music. "It's a lot of fun, we disagree and yell at each other a lot but the satisfaction of writing something that you're proud of is so great that it makes all the time and energy we put into it all worth it," said Lynch.
"It's a great experience to work with friends on a common goal of creating music. Each band member can put their own individual style into a song, which makes every song a blend of all of us. Being in a band is also a great way for people to express their emotions through art," said Wilson.
The Cause is disappointed that Red House is moving because it will no longer be close to the heart of Walnut Creek.
"Basically what I heard was that the guy who owns it wasn't really making money off of the live venue aspect of it as opposed to the music school so what they're gonna do now is move the music school to somewhere where nobody is going to go and not in the middle of downtown," said Milne.
Milne was very happy with Red House and their venue, "They don't try to scam you like other bigger city venues they're very real, and it's a great booking agent."
"They had an amazing staff, it's really just a shame to see it all kinda go out the way it did," said Milne.
"I think there's going to be other venues that will open up, but there will never be another Red House that's for certain," said Milne.
