Garden Club Branches out Across Campus

The garden club has high hopes for this year as they start to build our new garden behind the library. Since being torn out during construction in the summer, our garden has disappeared. Fear not, for the garden club has plans to rebuild a new and improved garden.

“When the solar panels were installed they had to take down our old garden so the good news is that the district said that they would replace the garden, you know bring it back," said foods teacher Ms. McTaggart about why the garden will be moving.

Another change coming to the garden behind the library is that it will no longer be considered and memorial garden, but a nice place to sit and relax. Removing plaques and replacing them with inspirational quotes. Along with the new addition of quotes, there will be composting bins to incourage students to compost.

“We’re working on compost for the school and getting the school into composting,” said junior and president of the Global Student Embassy club, Annalisa Kampel. “The leadership class will take the composting bins out at lunch and the foods classes will bring them back in and there will be stickers showing how to compost.”

The compost will be used for the garden and the food grown from the garden will be used by the foods classes.

“Well we’d also like to donate…some of the food to people in need but we also feel like we’ll use it in the class (foods class)," said McTaggart.

Along with food and quotes and such in the garden their will also be an abundance of flowers making the garden a lovely place to spend time and hangout. Senior Meghan Plestch got inspiration from her trip to Nicaragua.

“I went on a trip to Nicaragua when I was in Sophomore year during spring break, the idea of farming and sustainability wasn’t really on my radar until I went, and when I came back I started to get more interested in the environment so I wondered how I could get involved here at Las Lomas.”

Not only is there going to be a new garden but the GSE is also planning on getting chickens sometime during the new year, which will be kept in the garden.
